2 Student symposia per semester with funding up to 5000,- €

The Humboldt-Universitäts-Gesellschaft (HUG) supports up to two student-organised scientific symposia each semester. The symposia are supposed to expose the participants to new ideas and cutting edge research and give the organisers a first experience at hosting a research event. The application process is competitive. In the past, interdisciplinary proposals involving students from more than one discipline, proposals with an international dimension and symposia involving partners from outside of academia have been more successful than straight disciplinary proposals. The proposals must be initiated by students, demonstrate the benefit to students, should entail opportunities for students to showcase and receive feedback on their own academic work. They should also afford students the opportunity to network with more advaned academics.  The main target group for this format are MA/MSc students, but PhD and advanced BA/BSc students can also apply.

Q-Teams are an opportunity for junior research staff interested in integrating their teaching with their research. The format aims at PhD students or Postdocs, who are willing to lead a group of 5-10 students to carry out research on an aspect of an actual research project over one or two semesters. The successful applicants also receive some training in implementing Research-Based Learning and a crash-course in didactics. The bologna.lab funds up to 30 Q-Teams per year.

The Q-Kollegs (Q-Colloquium) are an international variant of the Q-Team. Under the guidance of more experienced researchers (Professors, Post Docs or PhD students), small student research teams from HU and one (or more) international partner institutionswork together on a   specified research topic. The Q-Kollegs typically consists of between eight to twelve students („fellows“) who are recruited through the participating institutes. The Q-Kollegs take place over the course of two semesters and conclude with a student conference, where the joint findings of the research project are presented at the Humboldt University.

The programme aims at enabling international staff mobility. It covers the costs for travel and also expenses of  approx. 850 ,- € per week per person.
(Calculations are based on the Bundesreisekosten-gesetz and differ in regard to countries)

For example: Joint workshops can be substantially funded by ERASMUS staff mobility, if all persons are affilated to the HU and are prepared and allowed to teach (8 h teaching/week). A part-time teaching contract (Lehrauftrag) is in this instant sufficient to qualify PhD students and acdemics as “affilated HU members”.
