Berlin 1933-2013: From Capital of the Third Reich to Germany’s Centre of Remembrance Culture

Taught by Florian Dierl

Block seminar (see seminar times below), Bebelplatz 1, room E 42

Course taught in English (with parts in German, depending on language level)

Course description

The seminar "Berlin 1933-2013“ is an introduction to modern German history. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the political system of National Socialism as well as of the political and cultural changes which German society underwent in dealing with its historical legacy.

Through examination of selected documents and study visits to historical places in Berlin, students will be confronted with the question of continuity and disruption in history, and, thus will gain a crucial insight into the methodological approaches of modern historiography. The reception of academic research on National Socialism will support their understanding of long-term political evolution and of the structural and ideological premises of the political landscape of Europe and Germany today.

Thus, the course may be of special interest for students of the Humanities and the Social Sciences, in particular those with an background/interest in History, Politics and European history of the 20th century.
