Berlin´s Contemporary Art Scene

Taught by Leonie Radine

Friday, 12:00 - 14:00, Universitätstraße 3b, Room 003

Course taught in English (with parts in German, depending on language level)

Course description

Berlin´s contemporary art scene involves a wealth of institutions, each one of which has its own organizational structure as well as a specific focus and concept of itself. As a result of the numerous exhibition possibilities—from museums with extensive collections of contemporary art, to the exhibition locations of private collectors, art associations, and autonomous art and project spaces, to over 400 galleries—the city holds a particular appeal for artists, who establish their studios and look for productive dialogue here.

Methodology and learning objectives

The seminar is intended to give the participants a broader look into the exhibition culture in Berlin through visits to various institutions and art spaces, and to impart multifaceted curatorial concepts and artistic approaches by means of talks with curators and artists in selected exhibitions.

Requirements

The requirements in terms of performance include active participation in joint discussions, a brief presentation on each particular venue that is visited on excursions as well as the preparation of an exhibition critique.
